Compassion. Personal attention. Caring.

You'll feel it the minute you step off the elevator. Our Maternity Care Center is a warm and calming place, where we're passionate about caring for women and their growing families.

Read real birth stories and find out why women choose
St. Joseph's Hospital.

Caring, experienced staff
Patients tell us our experienced staff sets us apart. Our doctors, certified nurse midwives and nurses have the knowledge and skill to gently see you through the birth of your baby. And if a medical problem develops, they will respond immediately.

With more than 800 years of combined experience, our nurses have seen it all. Throughout your stay, they will gladly answer your questions and give you the reassurance and support you need.

Family-centered care
For the comfort and ease of our expectant moms, St. Joseph's offers a family centered model of care. This means you stay in one private room throughout labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (if you are not having a waterbirth or Cesarean section).

After the birth, you are encouraged to keep your baby in the room with you. This time spent together helps you and your partner learn how to care for your baby's needs.

Maternity Care rooms were designed with extra space so family and friends can visit and celebrate with you. Each room also features a chair that pulls into a bed so your partner or support person can spend the night in your room.

Attending to your unique needs
Each mom has different expectations of the birth process. That's why we offer personalized care that respects your wants, needs and cultural traditions. For example, you can:

Safe birth
St. Joseph's has a low cesarean rate: 11.3% compared to a national average of 30.2%.* Our goal is to give you the safest birth and avoid uneccesary interventions. If complications arise and a cesarean section becomes necessary, rest assured we are well-prepared to make that option as safe as possible for you, too. For more information, call Linda Johnson at 651-232-5733.

Special Care Nursery
As the name implies, our Special Care Nursery is available for infants who are born up to six weeks prematurely and need extra care. While most babies are born healthy, neonatal nurse practitioners are in the hospital at all times to handle any emergencies that arise. Neonatologists (doctors who specialize in caring for newborns) provide medical direction for the Special Care Nursery.

Prenatal education
St. Joseph's and HealthEast Care System offer a variety of prenatal classes to prepare you and your partner for the birth of your baby. Many classes fill quickly, so register early to get the date you want.

Classes cover:

  • Early pregnancy
  • Birth preparation
  • Breastfeeding
  • Parenting
  • Sibling education
  • Cesarean birth

Many parents-to-be also sign up for our weekly e-mail. It offers customized tips and information for your week of pregnancy.

Natural family planning
We want to give you choices as you're planning a family. It's important to talk to your doctor or midwife about your options.

The Twin Cities FertilityCare Center, located at St. Joseph's, teaches the CREIGHTON MODEL of natural family planning. It's a highly scientific way for women and their partners achieve or avoid pregnancy without drugs or devices. Click here for more information.

Visitors
Partners, siblings and grandparents are welcome anytime throughout your stay. Visiting hours for other guests are daily from 2:30 to 3:30 pm and 7 to 8:30 pm. To protect you and your baby from illness, your visitors should be healthy.

Free parking
St. Joseph's is conveniently located in downtown St. Paul. For the ease of your family and friends, we offer free ramp parking for Maternity Care patients and visitors.

Meals
You will be served nutritious meals each day while you are in the hospital. If you would like to bring food from home, a microwave and refrigerator are available in the Maternity Care Center. Our cafeteria and vending machines are available for family and visitors.
