HealthEast Behavioral Care offers a wide range of services, from general psychiatric care to therapy for complex combinations of disorders.
We serve the Twin Cities with a comprehensive blend of chemical dependency and mental health services. Throughout our programs, our passion for caring and service is evident in our uniquely integrated approach to behavioral care.
Caring for the whole person HealthEast is passionate about healing the whole person - mind, body and spirit. Nowhere is this more important than in Behavioral Care, where minds, bodies and spirits are just a little more fragile.
Patients have told us the spirituality they experience at HealthEast is unique and does make a difference in their healing. As a faith-based health care organization, we encourage and celebrate spirituality among our staff, caregivers and patients. From bedside visits by chaplains to grief support for families, spiritual care can impact the emotional and psychological health of our patients and their families.

Inpatient Chemical Dependency St. Joseph 's Hospital offers two levels of unique, full-service inpatient care for adults dealing with chemical dependency.
A detoxification program serves those needing only immediate care.
An inpatient chemical dependency treatment program provides care for those requiring longer hospitalization.
All patients are medically managed by a team of caregivers.
Those who require inpatient chemical dependency care often have complex, co-existing problems. For these individuals, our team of psychiatrists, family practice and internal medicine physicians provide tailored assessments and treatment.
Outpatient Chemical Dependency Our primary outpatient treatment offers morning or evening sessions. A psychiatrist assesses and follows all outpatient participants while they are involved in the program, and our clinical psychologist provides testing and clinical supervision. This support continues even when the individual leaves our facility.
HealthEast also sponsors Boys Totem Town , Ramsey County Case Management and Friends in Recovery alumni support groups for important long-term encouragement.
Mental Illness & Chemical Dependency (MICD) HealthEast also provides individualized care to those facing dual diagnoses. Within our inpatient and outpatient programs, we recognize and treat individuals with chemical dependency and co-existing mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disease and depression.
Our integrated approach to treatment allows us to offer a full continuum of care with a range of appropriate options along the way, including:
Inpatient psychiatry and chemical

The Emergency Care Center at St. Joseph's is open 24-hours
a day, 365 days a year, with an experienced staff to care for
you and your family any time there's an emergency.
Our doctors, nurses and technicians are skilled in treating seriously ill and injured patients and they will provide the best care for your needs.
If you suspect a heart attack or stroke If you are experiencing chest pain or a symptom of stroke (such as weakness, dizziness, confusion or numbness),it's important to call 911 immediately and get to the ER as quickly as possible.
At the ER, our highly skilled team will use the newest technology to reduce the risk of damage to your heart or brain and decrease the chances of long-term effects.
While we care for patients with a wide variety of illness and injuries, we have special expertise in treating:
Heart attacks
Strokes
Gastric bypass problems
Kidney stones
When you arrive When you arrive, a specially-trained nurse will check your vital signs, evaluate your condition and ask about your health history. This process is called "triage," a French word meaning "to sort by priority."
Unlike other experiences you may have had, we do not put patients in ER beds on a first come-first served basis. Seriously ill patients must always be cared for first. This may mean a wait for those who are less sick; however, we will make every effort to see every patient as soon as possible. Keep in mind that even though you may have arrived before another patient, the doctor may see the other patient first if his or her condition is worse.
We respect your time. That's why we've implemented an electronic tracking board. It keeps us more efficient and reduces your wait time.
Emergency Care information
Family and friends may be asked to wait in the waiting room while we get you settled into your room. Once you're settled, family and friends are welcome to visit.
Visitors are encouraged to move their cars across the street to the parking ramp so incoming patients may arrive safely in the ER.
Only two visitors are allowed in each room at any one time. Our waiting area has a television and magazines available to help pass time.
Cell phones may only be used in the waiting room or hospital lobby.
Please do not eat or drink anything if you are waiting to be seen in the ER. Food and drinks are not allowed in the ER.
Visitors may eat or drink in the waiting room.
When waiting to be seen, please notify a staff member before using the bathroom, as we may need a urine sample.
Visitor information
Cafeteria The cafeteria is located on the lobby level of the hospital. It is open from 6:30 am to 1:30 pm and from 4:30 to 6:45 pm .
Vending machines There are vending machines located in the cafeteria as well as in the hallway by the emergency department waiting room.
What if I want to leave? If you were concerned enough to come to the emergency room, you need to be seen. Your health is important to us, so even if you feel better, we want you to stay and be seen by a doctor so we can make sure your medical needs are met.
After your emergency visit We will review your discharge instructions with you before you leave the Emergency Care Center. You will also receive a written copy to take home. Please feel free to ask questions if you do not understand the instructions. You are responsible for arranging a follow-up appointment with your primary health care provider or the doctor recommended by one of our staff members. You are responsible to check with your insurance plan for coverage.
About your bill You may get more than one bill for services you received in the emergency department. Your bills are not based on how long you were here, but rather on the treatments that were performed and the supplies that were used while you received care at the hospital.

Focusing on the quality of life
Hospice is a philosophy of
health care that affirms life and provides care and support for people
facing a life-limiting illness. HealthEast Hospice Care is a program of
emotional, spiritual, and physical care given in the comfort of home.
We focus on the quality of life rather than the duration, and on the individual
and family instead of just the disease. With Hospice Care, it's possible
to recapture the spirit of living and make the most of remaining time
with family and friends. Body, mind and spirit are all part of the care.
The decision to receive Hospice Care is ultimately
the patient's. We realize this is often a difficult decision, and we can
help patients and families work through this sensitive process.
HealthEast Hospice Care was Minnesota's first hospice,
and we continue to be a leader within the Twin Cities community. HealthEast
Hospice Care serves individuals in the seven county metro area and is
a Medicare Certified Agency.
Hospice home visits are provided 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. Hospital services are provided through St. Johns and
St. Josephs hospitals. Referrals may be made by anyone. Early referrals
are most beneficial.
The actual word "hospice" dates back to a
centuries-old tradition of preparing gifts for those about to set off
on a long journey. Today hospice care refers to an entire spectrum of
services focusing on the unique physical, emotional social and spiritual
needs of individuals who choose to live as fully as possible at life's
end.
Hospice Services
Experienced and dedicated health care professionals
provide emotional, spiritual, and physical care.
Medical supplies, equipment and medications related
to the life limiting illness.
Short-term hospitalization if there is a medical
crisis unmanageable at home.
Respite care for family members as needed for up
to five days.
Bereavement support and resources for adults, teens
and children.
Families are taught to provide care for their loved
ones in familiar, comfortable surroundings.
Comprehensive care can be provided in a private
home, an assisted living setting, care center or a residential hospice
facility.
Hospice staff members make regular visits, and on-call
services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Hospice is an appropriate option for patients with
terminal diagnoses from illnesses such as cancer, advanced heart and
lung disease, AIDS, Alzheimer's and other chronic diseases.
Hospice services are paid for by Medicare, Medical
Assistance and many private insurances under specific guidelines. In order
to receive coverage, follow these guidelines:
Physician certifies a limited life expectancy.
Focus of treatment is on symptom and pain management
rather than on cure of the disease.
Specific disease criteria are met.

State-of-the-art care in a comforting environment
From the moment patients and visitors walk into St. Joseph's, they experience the caring, personal services offered by our staff. State-of-the-art technology, specialized physicians, nurses and staff, and a wide range of services combine seamlessly with our personal, compassionate health care delivery.
Services provided St. Joseph's focuses on technology to offer you the best in medical imaging. We provide a wide range of radiology services, most of which can be completed in one day. Services we provide include:
Diagnostic x-ray Diagnostic x-ray is often a first test ordered by a doctor. It can visualize many different parts of the body, allowing more accurate testing and diagnosis. Basic x-rays use a small amount of radiation to view the chest, abdomen, spine, skull, arms or legs. More specialized x-rays use a contrast material, which is taken orally or injected, to better define the spine, kidneys, stomach, colon or bladder.
Nuclear medicine Nuclear medicine uses a mild, radioactive tracer to diagnose and treat abnormalities of the bone, liver, thyroid, lung, heart or other soft tissue. The scans, enhanced by a variety of special imagine techniques, are helpful in finding things such as blockages in coronary arteries, infections in bone or soft tissue and various types of tumors.
A small amount of radioactive material (a "tracer") is injected into a vein, inhaled or swallowed. A special camera captures the signals emitted from the radioactive tracer and records the signals as images.
Computerized tomography (CT) Computerized tomography (CT) is a specialized x-ray test that views the body in three-dimensional sections. It produces images that show both bone and soft tissues such as the brain, chest, spine, abdomen and extremities. Patients undergoing this test may be given a contrast to help highlight the different body parts. The contrast may be taken orally or injected. The patient lies on a padded table that moves in small increments through a donut-shaped scanner as the images are taken. With a doctor's order, a CT scan may also be used during a biopsy procedure.
Heart scan A heart scan is a convenient non-invasive test that detects calcium deposits in the heart's arteries. Heart scan is a form of computed tomography (see above) that scans the heart and then slices the image into sections. This allows a doctor to check for the presence of "hard" or calcified plaque. Hard plaque has been shown to be a predictor of heart disease and heart attack. Research has indicated that a heart scan may also identify a risk of heart attack in adults who are otherwise healthy and don't have the usual risk factors for heart disease.
Interventional procedures Interventional procedures are non-surgical tests that can be diagnostic as well as therapeutic. A common interventional procedure is the angiogram. During the procedure, a contrast material is injected into an artery or vein using a catheter. The contrast material outlines the blood vessels so they can be seen with an x-ray. This allows the cardiologist or radiologist to see narrowing, blockages or abnormalities in the vessels so corrective steps, such as the placement of a stent, can be taken.
Procedures like the placement of catheters for drug therapies are also interventional. In some cases, advanced interventional procedures can be used instead of more invasive surgery.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides doctors with a new method of looking inside the body without radiation. MRI uses computerized processing in conjunction with a magnetic field and radio frequency waves to make detailed, three-dimensional images of most parts of the body, including the spine, brain, joints, blood vessels and soft tissues. The patient lies on a padded table that slides into the MRI scanner. Multiple pictures can then be taken. These images help doctors detect problems not always visible by other diagnostic tests.
Ultrasound Ultrasound is a valuable imaging tool in the diagnostic field. Also known as sonography, it can be used to view any solid organ and many blood vessels in the body without radiation. Organs like the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, uterus, ovaries, testicles and thyroid can be examined.
Ultrasound is also used to determine the stage of pregnancy, check the baby's position in the uterus and assess the unborn baby's general health.
During the procedure, a gel is applied to the affected area and then a small probe is moved gently across the skin. High frequency sound waves, inaudible to the human ear, create images on a screen.

The Sleep Care Center at St. Joseph 's Hospital monitors, diagnoses and suggests treatment for a variety of sleep disorders. Each year we help hundreds of patients improve their health and quality of life. We are an accredited center through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Sleep disorders The National Institutes of Health estimate that there are more than 70 different sleep-related disorders. Some are simply annoying. Others deprive people of energy, judgment and concentration. Most sleep disorders can be diagnosed and treated; yet only a small percentage of people seek help.
Common sleep disorders include:
Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops for a period of time, ranging from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. When it becomes severe, it can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
Hypersomnia Hypersomnia is an excessive need for sleep, either continuous or intermittent, usually more than 12 hours a night. Many people suffering from hypersomnia feel the need to take long naps during the day.
Narcolepsy Narcolepsy, a form of hypersomnia, refers to uncontrollable attacks of daytime sleep, often resulting in hallucinations, muscle weakness or body collapse.
Insomnia Insomnia affects nearly 50 percent of elderly people. Caused by psychological, environmental or physical conditions, it can cause difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking during the night or an inability to fall asleep after waking.
Night Terrors Night terrors cause an individual to wake suddenly, sit up, open his/her eyes, scream, moan or cry. Night terrors can last as long as a half hour, after which a person returns to sleep. Unlike nightmares, which are often remembered the next morning, night terrors usually are not.
Sleep monitoring Prior to scheduling an appointment, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire about your sleep problems, general health and family medical history. Informational materials will be sent to you before your appointment.
Diagnosing sleep disorders requires that you be monitored during sleep. This happens throughout a single eight-hour nighttime period in a private patient room. Some patients are also monitored during daytime naps. Medical professionals monitor brain waves, eye movement, breathing, muscle activity, blood oxygen levels and heartbeat.
Diagnosis and treatment You may receive your test results in the morning or during a follow-up visit with your doctor. Treatment options might include weight loss, mechanical devices to keep you from sleeping on your back, dental devices, medication, lifestyle changes, counseling or surgery. You will then be given a follow-up program to ensure the suggested treatment still fits your needs and provides positive results.
Sleep Care staff St. Joseph 's Sleep Care Center is led by a medical director and experienced polysomnography technicians, all of whom have received special training to help patients find solutions to their sleep disorders. In addition, a multi-disciplinary team of specialists, including neurologists and psychologists, participates in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.
Sleep Care hours Sleep Care services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A physician referral is required.

the first outpatient surgery center in the Twin Cities. The Maplewood
center opened a few years later in 1982. Both Centers have provided many
years of quality outpatient surgery experience to our patients, families
and surgeons.
More surgical procedures are performed on an
outpatient basis, thanks to new medical technology, anesthesia and pain
management. HealthEast Surgery Centers provide safe, convenient, high
quality outpatient service for patients of all ages, including children
over six months old. For your convenience, we offer the entire surgical
experience - from admission to discharge - at each of our locations.
Accreditation HealthEast Surgery Centers are certified by the
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations (JCAHO ) . JCAHO
is an independent, not-for-profit organization that was established over
50 years ago. JCAHO is the world leader in evaluating the quality and
safety of care delivered in more than 17,000 health care organizations
across the country.
To maintain and earn accreditation, a facility
undergoes an extensive on-site review by a select team of JCAHO professionals
at least once every three years. The purpose of the review is to evaluate
the facility's performance in areas that affect patient care. Through
an assessment of processes and personal visits with patients and staff,
the facility is evaluated and scored.
Hours Our hours of business are Monday Through Friday
from 6 am to 5 pm. We are closed weekends and holidays.
Convenient Scheduling Procedures at either of our outpatient surgery
centers are scheduled by your surgeon's office.
Caring, skilled staff Our entire staff places a great deal of importance
on patient satisfaction and makes every effort to ensure you have a positive
experience while in our care. Our goal is to have you and your escort
feel fully informed about your preoperative and postoperative care, pain
management, and our strong commitment to patient safety.
HealthEast Surgery Centers are active members
of the Safest in America program. The goal of this program is to improve
patient safety and includes health care organizations from across the
Twin Cities.
While at the HealthEast Outpatient Surgery Centers,
you will be cared for by our highly skilled registered nurses, licensed
practical nurses, surgical technologists and nursing assistants, all of
whom are trained in the latest surgical techniques. In addition, anesthesiologists
and anesthetists maintain the safest and most current methods of delivering
anesthesia during surgery. They also provide consultation and care for
patients who are recovering from surgery.
Individualized care Before surgery, you will receive a call and a
patient booklet, Your Guide to Surgery , explaining preoperative instructions,
surgery and recovery procedures, as well as directions to the facility.
You
can also click here to review that information.
After surgery, you will be discharged only after
meeting specific guidelines and receiving complete, individualized instructions

A passion for caring and service Patients have reported a high level of satisfaction
with our outpatient surgery centers. Handy locations, with convenient
parking, allow easy access, especially for elderly patients, family and
escorts.
Patients and surgeons have said they like the
private, calm surroundings, with no emergency procedures to interrupt
the schedule. They also appreciate the comfort of having family members
wait with them before surgery. During the surgery, families wait in family-friendly
waiting areas and our staff keeps them updated on their loved one's procedure.
For children needing surgery Prior to your child having surgery, you are encouraged
to tour the surgery center to lessen your child's fears and have your
questions answered. On the day of surgery, one parent may go with your
child into the operating room until he or she is sedated.

What is vascular disease? Vascular disease is an illness or injury that affects the circulatory system (the system that carries blood to and from the heart). Due to age, heredity and certain lifestyle behaviors (such as smoking or unmanaged diabetes), arteries and veins may become narrowed or clogged and unable to circulate oxygen-rich blood throughout the body.
When problems arise in your circulatory system, you are at a greater risk for more serious health problems including heart attack, stroke or kidney failure. Like heart disease, vascular disease in its early stages and symptoms often go undiagnosed and untreated.
As a disease management center, HealthEast Vascular Center provides comprehensive, coordinated care for people with vascular disease and its complications.
A new approach Historically, vascular disease (disease outside the heart) was managed
by one physician or specialist who addressed the patient's immediate needs.
Today, in order to handle the varied needs of vascular patients effectively
and efficiently, collaboration among interventional radiologists and cardiologists,
vascular surgeons and wound care experts is necessary. It is this team
of specialists that welcome you to HealthEast Vascular Center.
